Assabet River NWR (MA)

September 20 and October 3, 2022

September 3 – Had a follow-up visit with a doc this morning and took a detour on my way home to visit Assabet River NWR. There are close to twenty hiking miles here, and I did about half by walking most of the interior trails and a bit of the perimeter. I’ll return next week before hunting season begins.

The US Army took this land from residents during WWII and used it for training. It didn’t become a NWR until 2000, and the concrete bunkers that once stored live ammunition now peer at passersby through growing vegetation.

October 3, 2022 – Finished the trails – I hiked the lower section (Fisher Loop etc), Winterberry, and the little paths by the ponds close to the road. The following are my favorite scenes from my excursions.

I’m now out of LifeQuest sites between my home in NH and my doctors in the Boston area unless I make significant detours of over two hours. That sucks. It’s been nice fitting in visits the same days I have appointments. Have I mentioned I can’t wait until I can hit the road/trails full-time? 🙂
