Bennington Battle Monument (Champlain Valley National Heritage Area, VT).

September 24, 2022

Made another stop on the way to visit my daughter. I see this monument every time I drive toward her college, and I finally timed my travels for when the visitor center and elevator to the top were open.

This 1891 magnesium limestone structure commemorates the Battle of Bennington, which was a turning point in the Revolutionary War. It’s 306 feet tall, and a small volunteer-manned elevator takes you to the top for five dollars. If you’re traveling through, it’s a nice place to stop for a bit of history, and there’s a small store for touristy-type morsels and mugs/keychains/etc.

Next LQ visit will likely be a mountain. I haven’t done a hardcore hike since mid-July, and I don’t want to get out of shape. I do walk at least five miles a day, but still. Time for some elevation gain and alpine zone vegetation.
