Got up after a restless night of continually sliding down the floor of my tent in spite of my pitching it on the flattest spot I could find…the whole site was a hill…and grumpily made my way to residential Oak Street in Ballston Spa. Parked my car at the northern terminus of Zim Smith Trail and got on my walking way.
My spirits became much improved as I hiked along the 10.5-mile trail. From Ballston Spa to Mechanicville, the path takes the wanderer through forests and along waterways, avoiding commercial areas and crossing residential streets until one arrives at Mechanicville, where a busy train depot and an off-limits golf course await. It was a lovely walk, especially with the falling leaves and beautiful colors. An unexpected bonus – though I had mentally prepared to double back and make the day a 20+-mile excursion, I easily found an Uber to take me back to my car after I arrived in Mechanicville.
Got lunch at Alaturco Gyro in Ballston Spa and had the best falafel, stuffed grape leaves, and baklava I’ve eaten in quite some time. Headed back to my campground afterward to rest and plan the next day’s adventure.
