New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park and Jean Lafitte National Park French Quarter Visitor Center.

Dec 20-26, 2023

Spent my birthday and the holidays in NOLA with my two adult kids. I’m only going to include photos that pertain to my LifeQuest on this blog – all the images of homes and buildings within the French Quarter, Celebration in the Oaks, and Christmas lights within hotels will stay private, except for a select view which I will post on my IG account tomorrow (@janiewalkerusa).

The New Orleans Jazz NHP now has its headquarters at the Jean Lafitte FQ VC. I walked through and read the info, but I did not take photos of the displays regarding the history of NOLA. The Jazz NHP seems to encompass most of the French Quarter, plus perhaps Louis Armstrong Park. I visited the park and adjacent Congo Square, which has a unique history. In the 1800s, slaves were given Sundays off and allowed to congregate in Congo Square. There they played drums and made music, and that music birthed jazz. The entire city has such a unique history and culture between the alternating French and Spanish colonial eras, the signing of the Louisiana Purchase, the arrival of the Haitian freed slaves, and the Native Americans who were of course there from the get-go. I enjoyed immersing myself in the history, and I will be back to see other LQ sites.

Jazz is everywhere in NOLA, on every street
