Chester Cedar Swamp NNL, Eight Mile NW&SR, Silvio O. Conte NWR Whalebone Cove Division and Salmon River Division (CT)

January 29 (Cedar Swamp, first two photos) and January 30.

There are no established trails heading into Chester Cedar Swamp NNL, an area full of Atlantic white cedars, but I was able to walk a forest road just over half a mile and get right next to the boundary. It’s the best I could do without bushwhacking. Since this is a National Natural Landmark, I did not want to tromp through and smash vegetation.

Photo number three is of Eight Mile (NW&S) River and was taken by the town of Hamburg, CT.

Photo four is from the inside of my car, and it is all I could get of Silvio O. Conte NWR’s Whalebone Cove Division. The area is past those trees and down by the water. It’s surrounded by water and private land, and I believe the only way in is by boat.

Photos four and five are at the confluence of the Salmon and Connecticut Rivers, where Silvio O. Conte NWR’s Salmon River Division is located. Access is by boat, though I enjoyed the view from the boat landing off Route 149.

That’s it until March, when I revisit CT to hike its National Recreation Trails.
