Fort Mason (Golden Gate National Recreation Area) and San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park (California)

October 23, 2024

I chose SF for the next month because there are a lot of NP sites with great walking opportunities for rehab. I am now at a small rental unit close to the Marina District.

Did just over five miles today without a cane. Had to take a lot of breaks though, and the pain has shifted. My lower back no longer hurts, but my right buttock muscles ache constantly. I like to joke to myself that I have a broken ass.

Walked to Fort Mason, which was a military base for centuries before becoming the current arts center. Soldiers heading off to war in the Pacific left mainland USA at this site. On the way to Fort Mason, I walked through an open area with great views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

There’s a perfect view of Alcatraz walking down the hill from Fort Mason toward the SF Maritime National Historic Park.

Visited both the Maritime Museum and the Visitor Center. Lots of displays about the history of the Bay, the earliest ships, the Gold Rush, the transformation after shipping containers started going through nearby Oakland Bay. I didn’t take many photos since by now the muscles in the right side of my ass were screaming. Took everything I had to focus on the exhibits. Sat down for a while in nearby Fisherman’s Wharf until I felt better, then slowly made my way back to my lodging.

Will take it easier today and either wait until tomorrow to head back out or do something with fewer miles involved.
