Block Island National Wildlife Refuge (RI)

April 3, 2023. I caught the 6:30am ferry from Judith Point and rode out to Block Island, then walked four miles from the landing point to the wildlife refuge’s northernmost section. The day was gorgeous, and the walk along the flat road felt easy. It’s still the off-season, which meant it was just me and the locals out there, just how I like it.

Once at the refuge, there’s a half-mile unnamed trail to the lighthouse, and another short unnamed trail from the lighthouse to the ocean. Seagulls abounded and hollered at me, but none came too close.

After enjoying the views of the ocean and lighthouse, I walked back to the ferry landing and grabbed lunch at the only open off-season restaurant, then I explored the surrounding area until it was time for my return ferry. I checked out the remains of a large 19-20th Century hotel, and I took an almost-nap while staring blissfully at the ocean while sitting in a large covered public patio. It was a good day.
