My last stop in Maine was Carrying Cove Bog National Natural Landmark. It’s in Quoddy Head State Park, and I visited July 23 before heading to the nearby Roosevelt Campobello site. During that visit, I thought I had seen the right bog. Turns out the bog is located at the western edge of the park and not within the park’s main network of trails. Back I went on the 26th before heading south to leave the state. I found no signs marking the bog, so I took a ton of photos of the entire area where the bog is supposedly located (first four photos). One can only get so close, and much of it looks like meadow from afar. Between that visit and my earlier visit, I think I stumbled upon the thing at some point. It’s a coastal and raised plateau bog.
Quoddy Head State Park is a lovely location in its own right with well-maintained trails and a lighthouse. My first visit was on a foggy day, so I did not have view when I hiked the trails. The images I see online are beautiful. My last four photos are of the “Arctic Bog” within the trail network, a wooded trail, and the lighthouse.
