Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail, Yellow Gap and Elizabethton, TN sections

Days 3 and 4 (March 9 and 10, 2026) of my AT hiker reunion with Fin and Silver Bullet consisted of hiking two stretches of the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail. This trail follows the path militia used in 1780 to join the Revolutionary War at the Battle of Kings Mountain in South Carolina.

One stretch of trail (first batch of photos) was a lovely path through farmland and woods up to Yellow Gap and intersected with the Appalachian Trail. 2300 feet of elevation gain and about ten miles round trip. The trailhead wasn’t far from Roan Mountain, TN.

The other stretch (remainder of photos) was an urban 5-mile stroll through Elizabethton, TN ending at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park. The Park had an informative inside display along with a reconstruction of Fort Watauga, the structure built by colonialists in 1776 for protection against Cherokee attacks.

My four days spent with Fin and Silver Bullet were immensely enjoyable. It was so good to see them again.
