Waverley Trail (MA, National Recreation Trail)

January 10, 2022

Many thanks to my oldest daughter for coming with me on this one. We had errands to do in Cambridge, and she didn’t mind stopping by neighboring Waltham on the way home so I could quickly get this National Recreation Trail. She returns to college from winter break soon, and it was good to spend time with her.

Waverley Trail is one of those NRTs that explores a residential/urban area and not the wilderness. It’s an easy, paved walk along a sidewalk that runs from Belmont to Waltham and ends in Beaver Brook Reservation near the last remaining Waverley Oak. The oak is estimated to be at least a couple centuries old.

The paved path has a green line down its center, so it is impossible to get lost. Information placards about the history of the town and oaks stand here and there along the way.

We moved quickly since it was frigid out and the wind whipped us a bit. I did stop and read all the signs, though.

You can park for free along the street or at Beaver Brook Reservation itself.

Note that I am working on uploading full photos without having to minimize them. This site blocks my original full photos. I have the full photos on my Instagram account, @janiewalkerusa. Will dedicate the next week to fixing this issue so the photos on this blog henceforth appear in full.
