For the National Heritage Areas, I usually choose a small-town tourist attraction or historical landmark/museum. Hence my decision to check out the one-room intermodal museum located within the Picayune Amtrak Station building. The room is a testimony to the region’s railroad builders and contains many photos and old train-related artifacts. There are also a couple of Confederate remnants that were found in local woods (a cannonball and a bayonet). The museum is free and located right next to the train station’s waiting area.

Bogue Chitto NWR is located mostly in Louisiana with a tiny bit sticking into Mississippi. Since I am kind of OCD with my quest, I “have” to visit the NWR in both states even if the hiking trails are all located in the Louisiana portion. Hence my short visit to the boat launch parking area within the NWR near Palestine, MS (just west of Picayune). Hobolochitto Creek and its surrounding vegetation looked pretty, though I did experience my first mosquito bite of the year within five minutes of exiting my vehicle. Also noticed that the info signs get used for target practice.
