Golden Gate NRA and Juan Bautista de Anza NHT, San Francisco county sites

Nov 1-6, 2024

The exception is Alcatraz, which I will visit with my daughter next week.

I try to keep walking distances under eight miles and take a break every other or every third day so I don’t accidentally overdo it during my recovery period.

Note: public transit is easy, inexpensive, and plentiful in SF. No Ubers needed unless you’re in a hurry.

Walking across the Golden Gate Bridge.

Mountain Lake (Presidio). The 1776 Anza colonists camped here while establishing the Presidio.

Baker Beach, part of the Presidio hence the military structures. Also the original site of Burning Man (1986-1990).

China Beach

Lands End. Gorgeous trails over cliffs by the ocean, my photos don’t do the place justice. Last photo is of Sutro Baths ruins. Built in 1894, it was a massive and stunning swimming and art facility for the public. It declined during the Great Depression due to public transportation cuts and new health codes.

Ocean Beach

Lake Merced, a camping stop for the Anza expedition.

Fort Funston and 200-feet high sandy bluffs. Former military defense site (established 1900)

Golden Gate Park. There is a ton to do here, I only included a few photos. Bison have been kept in the park since 1891 and are cared for by the nearby zoo. There are trails and sculptures, a botanical garden, windmills, a Japanese Tea Garden, and much more – too much to detail in this post. Anza’s expedition came through here when it was all just sand dunes and scrub.
