Chalmette, LA
December 23, 2023
During my NOLA vacay, I took a fifteen-minute Uber ride from the French Quarter to the Chalmette Battlefield. This is where the January 8, 1815 Battle of New Orleans took place, with the British trying to advance from the swamplands and the Americans defending the territory. This was one of the final conflicts of the war; the treaty ending the war was signed in late 1814, but it did not take effect until both governments ratified it…hence the fighting into 1815.
The plantation house overlooking the battlefield was taken over by Andrew Jackson and used as his headquarters from late 1814 until the final victory of the Battle of New Orleans.
Also took a gander at the adjoining cemetery which holds Union Civil War soldiers and ex-slaves.
