John Hay National Wildlife Refuge

May 14, 2021

After visiting Brookline (see earlier post), I had time to walk the Forest Ecology Trail at John Hay National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge is best accessed through the John Hay Estate at The Fells, a beautiful property that I intend to revisit when I have more hours to spare. You can park in the estate’s parking lot, pay a fee ($8 if the estate house is closed and $10 if it is open), walk to the back of the main house, and pick up the trail in the back. The trail goes down to the edge of Lake Sunapee and meaders along the shore, looping back to the parking area via a connector path. The entire thing is just over 1.5 miles long. It’s an enjoyable walk in the woods with a nice view of Mount Sunapee across the water. An interpretive pamphlet/guide can be found at the parking area.
