Rosie the Riveter National Historical Park, Richmond, CA. November 15, 2024.
Took the free-on-Fridays ferry to Richmond from San Francisco to visit this NHP. Got great photos of Fort Point nestled underneath its Golden Gate Bridge arch.
The Visitor Center is right by the ferry terminal. Arrived in time to catch the end of a live presentation by real-life Rosie Jean Gibson.
Women filled the WWII labor shortage left after the men went off to war. They worked in defense production, primarily in shipyards and factories. These trailblazers demonstrated to American society that women could do jobs previously held by only men.
Richmond was one of WWII’s main shipyards, hence the location choice for this National Park site. The SS Red Oak Victory, WWII ammunition vessel welded by Rosies and used in the South Pacific, is still anchored at the docks.
A nearby park showcases the Rosie the Riveter Memorial.
