A long, gravel, pockmarked road leads toward the refuge and its three hiking trails. High clearance and slow driving is helpful.
Photos 1-4: Carter Meadow Road Trail is a lollipop hike leading to a small observation tower at the edge of the marsh/meadow.
Photos 5-7: Oak Point Trail starts on an old logging road before becoming a regular footpath. The logging road was swampy with lots of shoe-sucking mud. The viewpoint at the end of the trail looking into the marsh was nice, though.
Photos 8-12: Johnson Brook Trail is a National Recreation Trail. It looks like it once got a lot of love, with lots of boardwalks and wide paths. Right now it has a lot of blowdowns – maybe the trail maintainers just haven’t gotten to it yet this year as it is only early May.
Black flies are out! 😬
