Cross Creeks National Wildlife Refuge. TN

Oct 24, 2026. This NWR in northern TN is home to a variety of species, and its open water habitats are a favorite of migratory birds. The refuge is closed Nov 15-March 15 to give wintering birds a break from we pesky humans.

Over ten miles of gravel roads allow visitors to view water, birds, cornfields, and trees. There used to be a footpath deep within the refuge called The Woodpecker Trail that wandered through the forest in the middle of an isthmus, but that trail has been abandoned. I tried to walk where it used to be, but nature has completely reclaimed the path. There is a gravel road right beside that narrow strip of woods, so I walked that for a while instead.
