Hamilton Grange National Memorial

April 29, 2026. The Grange is the only home Hamilton ever owned and was completed just two years before his death. The house has been moved twice but still remains on the original 32-acre property.

I was surprised to find this site crowded with visitors. I’d just come from Grant’s mausoleum which had been nearly empty. Then I remembered about the hit Broadway show I still haven’t seen.

The NPS did a great job restoring the Grange. Everything inside has original colors (wall paint, curtains), etc. Furniture reproductions are mixed with Hamilton’s actual furniture. The wall moldings are authentic.

Hamilton is certainly an interesting figure given his childhood, writings, fast rise to prominence, handling of the nation’s economics, and general impatience. His interesting life ended in an interesting but tragic fashion. Hard to understand why anyone thought a duel would solve anything. The loser died, and the “winner” Burr became a social pariah for killing the larger-than-life and popular Hamilton.

So ends my time in New York for now. Soon heading off to Central America to finish what I started last December. Also have some time planned for a bit of South America.
