Martin Van Buren National Historic Site and Van Buren Nature Trails (NRT). Kinderhook, NY

April 14, 2026. Van Buren lived at Lindenwald, the term he used for this home, for 21 years beginning immediately after his presidency. The house sits along Old Post Road, which was the main route between NYC and Albany. Politicians and celebrities often stopped by to visit and pay their respects.

The home includes roughly 200 acres and was/still is active farmland. Van Buren demonstrated the usefulness of farming in the Northeast as a way to prevent land ownership/political power from continually migrating westward. A “gentleman farmer,” Van Buren managed the farm, but hired farmers along with Van Buren’s sons did the hard labor.

A set of nature trails across the road are designated as “a” National Recreation Trail. Total mileage is less than 3, and I made short work of it. Casual woods walking. Bugs are coming out though – ack.
