Aug 31, 2026. Made a good faith attempt at Otis Pike/Burma Trace National Recreation Trail at Fire Island National Seashore. The original trail went from Wilderness Visitor Center to Watch Hill and was obliterated by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. A 2024 update on the NRT website states the trail was rebuilt and is maintained, but I could not find access onto the main trail from the eastern end.
The initial boardwalk is lovely and in great shape, but there are no trail signs or markers part the boardwalk, the map does not show the trail going onto the beach. and I could not find a path that was not blocked off for nesting purposes. I walked the beach for a while trying to find a way back into the center of the dunes/brush where the trail is supposed to be, but I could find no legal access. Perhaps the usual way is blocked off, though I could find no announcement of seasonal closure on the NPS website.
