Cops raided Greenwich Village’s Stonewall Inn one night in late June, 1969, and the LGBTQ clientele fought back. Frustrated at being routinely targeted and harassed, the bar’s patrons rioted. The riots spread, lasted for days, and marked the beginning of the gay liberation movement.
The Inn continues to operate, though part of the original Stonewall is now occupied by the NPS Visitors Center.
I lived in NYC for the better part of the 1990s but never visited this building. It was good to see the landmark in person.
